Jen Hall and Matthew Stead founded the band in Exeter after Simon Bish (ex- Thrilled Skinny) persuaded Matthew to sing his songs in front of an audience. Thom Allott (bass), Sharon Leach (keyboards), Caroline Honour (violin) and Dan Morton (drums) completed the line-up.
A Fine Day For Sailing have released three albums. The bedroom recording album Honeylands (2009, Pop Noise Records) featured Matthew Stead's bittersweet lyrics and wonderful melodies. One year later the albums "My Baby Loves Pop Music" and "Sand Box" (2010, both Vollwert Records), were released. Both albums received 5/5 in Artrocker magazine, who claimed they were the "most charming indiepo this side of The Boy with the Arab Strap".
A Fine Day for Sailing pride themselves on Beach Boys-harmonies with a Motown sense of pop. The band are finishing recording their fourth album, due for release in late 2012.
