Je Suis Animal - Self Taught Magic From A Book (Angular / Lost & Lonesome) CD

Je Suis Animal pretend they've got a French name, sing in English but live in Norway. Don't be wrong-footed by their apparent identity crisis though, a few moments spent with Self-Taught Magic From A Book will confirm that this bunch sound about as indie as indie can be. They've got blissful girly vocals, a janglesome, trebly guitar sound plus, a thorough working knowledge of Stereolab's back-catalogue, and a JAMC/MBV-influenced production sound. Je Suis Animal are quite adorable, sounding a bit like Broadcast on the excellent Beginning Of Time' and bringing to mind '90s casualties like Velocette just about everywhere else, particularly on the beautiful opener 'Secret Place'. Very lovely indeed.
